Every January, business owners across the country scramble to answer the same questions:

  • Do I need to file 1099s?

  • Who should I file them for?

  • Did my CPA / payroll / bill pay system already handle this?

At A Bigger Bottom Line, we’ve designed our 1099 process to remove that confusion entirely — while keeping compliance accurate, efficient, and fair across all client sizes.

This post explains what 1099 services are included in each of our packages, and when additional filing fees may apply.

Why We Handle 1099s as Part of Bookkeeping

1099 compliance isn’t just a year-end task — it’s the result of how vendors are tracked all year long.

Because we already:

  • Review vendor payments

  • Track contractor activity

  • Collect and store W-9s

  • Classify vendors correctly in the books

…it makes sense for us to also prepare your 1099 filings. When 1099s are handled separately (by payroll providers, bill pay tools, or even CPAs without full bookkeeping visibility), errors and missed filings are far more common.

Our goal is simple:

👉 One clear system. One source of truth. No surprises.

What’s Included in All ABBL Packages

Regardless of your service level, all clients receive:

  • Year-round tracking of 1099-eligible vendors

  • W-9 collection and secure storage

  • Review of vendor classifications

  • A year-end 1099 Summary Report

  • Client approval workflow before filing

  • Coordination to prevent duplicate filings

You are never asked to decide whether you “need” 1099s — we determine that for you based on your actual activity.

1099 Filing Included by Service Package

Each package includes a reasonable number of federal 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC filings, based on the typical complexity of businesses at that level.

Platinum (Daily / Full-Service) - Includes up to 10 1099 filings

Platinum includes preparation and filing of up to 10 Form 1099s annually for eligible vendors, ensuring your business remains compliant with IRS reporting requirements while avoiding last-minute stress and potential penalties.

As part of this service, we manage the end-to-end 1099 process, including:

  • Reviewing vendor payments and identifying which vendors meet 1099 filing requirements

  • Verifying vendor classification (independent contractor vs. entity type)

  • Collecting and maintaining Form W-9 documentation

  • Preparing accurate 1099 forms based on your books and payment data

  • Filing 1099s with the IRS and providing copies to vendors by required deadlines

We also help ensure your records are properly structured throughout the year so that 1099 preparation is clean, accurate, and efficient—not a scramble in January.

This service is designed to cover the majority of small to mid-sized businesses with a manageable number of contractors. If your business requires filings beyond the included 10 forms, additional 1099s will be prepared and filed for an additional fee, as outlined in your engagement agreement.

Important Note: Accurate 1099 filing depends on proper vendor setup and consistent bookkeeping throughout the year. As part of our Platinum service, we proactively guide you on best practices—such as collecting W-9s before issuing payment and coding expenses correctly—so there are no surprises at year-end.

Throughout the year, ABBL:

  • Maintains vendor payment records through your bookkeeping

  • Identifies vendors who may require 1099 reporting

  • Prepares a year-end summary of eligible vendors for your review

  • Flags missing W-9 forms and requests client assistance when needed

  • Prepares and files approved 1099 forms

This integrated approach ensures 1099 compliance is handled as part of your bookkeeping—not as a last-minute task.

Starter (Annual) - Includes up to 1 1099 filing

1099 Filing Support (Up to 1 Federal 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC Included Annually) The Starter program includes preparation and filing of up to one (1) federal Form 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC per year for an eligible vendor, based on your year-end bookkeeping records.

This service is designed to support basic 1099 compliance for businesses with minimal contractor activity.

What This Feature Includes For the included 1099 filing, ABBL will:

  • Track vendor payments throughout the year based on recorded transactions

  • Review vendor classifications for 1099 eligibility

  • Prepare the appropriate federal Form 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC

  • File the form electronically through our standard filing system

  • Provide a copy of the filed form for your records

  • Include the vendor in a year-end 1099 summary and approval process prior to filing

Eligibility Requirements To complete a 1099 filing, the following must be in place:

  • Vendor must be properly set up in QuickBooks

  • A completed and signed Form W-9 must be on file

  • Payments must be accurately recorded in the books

If required information is missing or incomplete, additional work or delays may occur.

Additional 1099 Filings (Add-On Required)

  • Only one (1) 1099 filing is included in the Starter program

  • Any additional 1099 filings will be billed separately as an add-on or change order

What Is Not Included This feature does not include:

  • Filing of more than one 1099 form

  • Filing of 1099 forms other than 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC, such as:

    • 1099-INT

    • 1099-DIV

    • 1099-R

    • Other specialty 1099 forms

  • State-level 1099 filings that require:

    • Manual submission

    • State-specific portals

    • Multi-state filing requirements

These items require additional processing and will be billed separately if needed.

This structure ensures:

  • Small businesses are fully covered

  • Larger contractor-heavy businesses pay proportionately

  • No client subsidizes another client’s compliance costs

When Additional 1099 Charges Apply

Some businesses naturally require more extensive filings. In those cases, additional charges apply only when actual filing costs increase.

1️⃣ Filing More Than Your Plan Includes

If you have more 1099s than your package includes, additional filings are billed per form, based on current filing costs.

These charges typically cover:

  • IRS e-file fees

  • System processing costs

  • Additional review and compliance labor

You will always receive a summary and approval before anything is filed.

2️⃣ Filing 1099 Forms Other Than NEC or MISC

Our standard packages include 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC, which cover the vast majority of contractor payments.

Some less common 1099 types — such as:

  • 1099-INT

  • 1099-DIV

  • 1099-R

  • Other specialty forms

…cannot be filed through our primary accounting system and require third-party filing platforms.

These filings are billed separately due to:

  • External platform fees

  • Manual preparation requirements

  • Additional compliance steps

3️⃣ State-Level 1099 Filings That Require Manual Submission

While some states participate in combined federal/state 1099 filing, not all states support automated e-filing.

If your business requires:

  • Manual state 1099 filing

  • Filing in multiple states

  • State-specific formats or portals

Additional fees may apply to cover:

  • Manual state submission

  • State system registration

  • Extra compliance review

We’ll always notify you in advance if a state filing requires manual handling.

Why We Price 1099s This Way

Our pricing model is designed to be:

  • Transparent – you know what’s included

  • Fair – larger businesses pay for higher volume

  • Protective – prevents missed or duplicate filings

  • Sustainable – ensures quality and accuracy year after year

Most importantly, it allows us to keep 1099 compliance integrated into your bookkeeping, rather than treated as a confusing afterthought.

The Bottom Line

When you work with A Bigger Bottom Line:

  • You don’t have to guess whether you need 1099s

  • You don’t have to coordinate between multiple providers

  • You don’t have to worry about filings being missed or duplicated

We track, prepare, review, and file — and we only charge more when the work truly goes beyond what’s included in your plan.

If you ever have questions about your 1099s, we’re here to walk you through them clearly and confidently.

1099 Rules for Business Owners

If your business paid anyone over $600 this year, you may have an obligation to send those individuals and small businesses a 1099 form before the deadline of JANUARY 31st.

The easiest way to be prepared each year for this reporting process is to ask your Vendors for a W9 form & Email address (ideally before you pay them). If you have not done this yet this year, then now is a good time to start collecting these emails and W9's from your suppliers. As a client of our we will make sure you stay on top of these requests throughout the year so you are ready to file on time.
